Franzen spent nine years writing The Corrections after publicly abandoning his previous novel. The book sparked a national debate about literary ambition versus accessibility after Oprah's initially rescinded book club invitation generated enormous media attention.
The novel sold over three million copies and won the National Book Award in 2001. HBO developed a television pilot that was never aired. Franzen is one of the most debated literary figures in contemporary American letters.
